The structure of a manual transmission contains a very important device, the synchronizer. The function of the synchronizer is obvious: it is a mechanical device that solves the problem of inconsistent engine speed and transmission speed during gear shifting, as the output gear speed is faster than the gear that is about to be engaged. It effectively prevents gears from not engaging and eliminates gear noise during shifting. Without a synchronizer, forcing a slow-rotating gear into a fast-rotating gear would inevitably cause gear clashing.
Simply put, a synchronizer is a set of friction plates arranged on the engaging sleeve and gear set. Unlike ordinary friction plates, its friction surface is conical. The function of this set of friction plates is to perform friction in advance before the straight teeth and the circular disc's involute teeth come into contact, transferring energy from the higher-speed side to the lower-speed side, increasing the speed of the lower-speed side to synchronize with the higher-speed side. This not only ensures normal shifting but also provides a buffering effect. The number and material of the conical friction plate set directly affect the performance of the synchronizer.
